Another year, another roadtrip, this time a big loop up through various national parks and a week or so in Yellowstone as the highlight. I’ll include visits to Portland OR and SF. By going in late April, i.e. Spring, I thought I was timing it just right to avoid the snow and crowds, but I ended up experiencing both. Due to unusually cold weather, the thaw had not quite happened, and this was very evident at Lassen Volcanic National Park, where most of the roads were still closed and I was one of the few visitors.
I was just way too early to see all the sights at Lassen, so I had to make do with a trek up past the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center to the Sulphur Works and back — a bit of a waste of time really. Trudging through the snow, sans snowshoes, to the Sulphur Works was exhausting and challenging (think: putting your foot down on what looks like solid, compressed snow, and suddenly finding yourself crotch-deep in freezing, melting ice).
