‘Teton’ means breast, so Grand Teton basically means big boob. The name was coined by a French-Canadian fur trapper who, upon seeing the three prominent peaks of the Teton Range from the west, nicknamed them “Les Trois Tetons,” meaning “the three breasts”. This name ultimately stuck and became the official designation for the range and the tallest peak, Grand Teton. The park is 1,300 km² so I barely skimmed the surface, making a quick 1-day visit on my way south to Nevada. The very first photos of the park were taken only 150 years ago by artist and photographer William Henry Jackson (died 1942).
Grand Teton National Park is an almost pristine ecosystem and the same species of flora and fauna that have existed since prehistoric times can still be found there. More than 1,000 species of plants, dozens of species of mammals, 300 species of birds, more than a dozen fish species, and a few species of reptiles and amphibians inhabit the park
