From Portland, I travelled to a place I have long planned to visit, Yellowstone Park, the crown jewel of US National Park Service. It is the oldest national park in the United States, encompassing a vast area of over 8,900 km² (2.2 million acres), and is renowned for its unique geothermal features, diverse wildlife, and stunning landscapes. I was fortunate to spend over a week exploring it, and could have spent even more time there.
Basing myself in the town of West Yellowstone, I made daily forays into the park.
Bison (buffalo) are a common sight in Yellowstone. I saw them every day I was there, mostly along riverbanks or scattered in clearings, and sometimes on the road. A bull bison can weigh up to 900 kg (2,000 lbs), stand 1.8 m tall (6 ft), and run 3x faster than humans. Bison injure more people in Yellowstone than any other wildlife. Since 1978, bison in the park have injured almost 100 people and killed 2 (bears in the park have killed 8 people).
