Carlsbad Caverns, located on the New Mexico/Texas border, is a truly amazing cave formation that includes over 100 caves. To get into them, you have to book ahead. Once there, you enter an elevator that takes you quite deep underground, about 250m, which made me edgy because I’m a little claustrophobic, and the idea of being so deep underground was unsettling. You emerge from the elevator into what feels like a large underground hall, full of stalactites — it’s called The Big Room and in fact it’s the largest subterranean chamber in North America and the 32nd largest in the world. It’s very impressive at almost 1.22 km long, 191 m wide, and 78 m high at its highest point.
Please note that my photos do not do the caves justice. They have to be experienced first hand. The cave environment is not conducive to simple photography and I do not have the lenses and lighting equipment to document the scenery underground adequately. Note also that this blog entry, as well as all my other blog entries, should be viewed on a large PC monitor, not a smartphone screen (small screens are just a waste of time for viewing photos).
