Red Rock Canyon and the Valley of Fire, both close to Vegas, are familiar places for me, places mt late wife and I used to enjoy 20 years ago. We’d go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, which boasts numerous wonderful hiking trails, and go fossicking and sightseeing in the Valley of Fire, where hundreds of 4,000-year old (and older) rock drawings and petroglyphs can be found. Don’t visit in summer when the heat is unbearable, is my advice.

My late wife and I spent many happy weekends hiking the Red Rock Canyon nature reserve just outside “Lost Wages”. Going back there brought up memories that made me sick at heart, or “hartseer” (literally “sore heart”) as the Afrikaners say.
