I visited the Getty Villa again, noting that they have extensively renovated the place. It still has the most amazing collection of antiquities. Perhaps you’ll also find them interesting?
The Getty Villa is modelled on the Villa dei Papiri, an ancient Roman country house located in Herculaneum, Italy, that was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Its rediscovery and the collection of papyrus scrolls found there inspired J. Paul Getty to build this museum replica in California
How sombre some of these sculptures are. These are people who lived and died thousands of years ago, yet via the medium of art, we can still look into their faces. “Beauty perishes in life, but is immortal in art” — Leonardo da Vinci.
